FARO Scanner 2 Render

This is a brief glimpse at our attempts to 3D scan a real-world location, converting it into a colored 3D set. We used the FARO Large Scale scanner to capture this location. It took eight scans (seven of which we used) and several photos. The results are here to view. Next time we do this we will first strip the location bare, scan it, then scan each object and re-stage the scene in 3D.

Creaform’s VIUscanner on the job

A quick behind-the-scenes look at how Remnant Studios uses Creaform’s VIU color laser scanner for 3D production.

How do small companies keep up with larger studios which can employ large teams of 3D modelers? We use 3D laser scanners to drastically simplify the modeling and texturing process.

Interior CG Set

This CG set was constructed using 3D laser scanning and traditional modeling approaches in combination with each other. 3D laser scanning was used to capture the surface detail of the texturing of the walls and the tiled floor. Both elements were converted from polygonal models into normal maps and attached to simple models making up the floor and walls. With the exception of the lamp, the rest of the scene was modeled by hand in Cinema 4D.
